Summary of South Carolina Graduated Licensing Law
(detailed chart bottom of this page)
South Carolina has a three stage licensing process for minors.
  1. Learner’s License (at least age 15) We recommend our Driver Ed in a Box® to use during the Learner stage. Shows the parent how to teach collision-free driving habits and provides unique teaching tools (mirrors, checklists, videos, audio instruction series, etc.)
  2. Intermediate License (ages 16 - 17)  If you are 16
years old and have held your beginner's permit for at
least 180 days or have a conditional license, you are
eligible for a special restricted license.
    • To get a special restricted driver's license,
you must bring your parent or legal guardian with you
      to sign your application.
    • You must bring your birth certificate, social
security card, proof of residency and insurance
      information.
    • You must submit Form PDLA that certifies you have:
      • Completed a driver's education course
      • Had satisfactory school attendance
      • Practiced driving with your licensed parent or
guardian for 40 hours, including 10 hours of driving
practice at night. (Driver Ed in a Box gives you the
tools to become safe collision free drivers during
        this period)
  3. Regular License (age 17 if has had license at least 6 months)
Teens want to know how to stay out of collisions!
Today’s teens do not just want their license; they want to be good collision-free drivers. They know the risks. Virtually all have friends who got a license and were involved in a collision in the first four weeks. Most teens have lost classmates due to fatal collisions.
Driver Ed in a Box® Certificate of Completion!
Choose Interactive CD-Rom Version or Text Version.
Teens want to know "why" the things you ask them to do will work. When you complete the full course you get a Certificate of Completion. Take this to your insurance agent. It varies state by state and by insurance company, but you may receive an insurance discount.
Using the full course your teen will learn why each step is important while learning the collision-free HABITS that make you a better driver. The full course also includes a section on Social & Consumer Issues. This includes how alcohol and drugs as well as emotions and attitude affect driving performance. Also covered are vehicle ownership (buying, leasing, insuring, and maintaining).
Over 15,000 students have used Driver Ed in a Box®.
" I have recently completed the Driver Education Classroom Program and as I look back, I see all of the helpful skills and precautions which have now become habits laid out in your training manual. This program has been extremely helpful in forming the way I look at driving. I have been educated in the techniques of defensive driving and this has laid a strong foundation for collision free driving. As my mother and I slowly progressed to small and then urban roads, it was exceptionally useful to be able to identify threats and use the many terms that were given to potential dangers." - Student, Lexington SC

"Parent Audio Tapes/CD's were very good, I especially liked the part about encouraging my student while still instructing." - Parent, Lexington SC

"All areas of collision free driving (defensive driving) are presented in a logical format." - Robert Smoak; North Augusta, SC

"Excellent. Driver Ed in a Box covers everything and every situation you could possibly think of." - E.H., North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

" I think the program really taught me a lot about being a careful, cautious driver and it also taught me that I cannot think or plan for the other people on the road or know what they are going to do. I must watch out for them and be a defensive driver. I feel this program will help me through out the rest of my life with my driving and I am thankful I got the opportunity to use it." - Amanda McLane; North Augusta, SC
