Summary of Minnesota Graduated Licensing Law
(detailed chart bottom of this page)
Minnesota has a three stage licensing process for minors.
  1. Permit, at least age 15, have completed approved classroom driver education course and be enrolled in approved 6 hour behind-the-wheel driver training course. Driver Ed in a Box® is an approved classroom driver education course for families that home school.
  2. Provisional License, at least age 16, must have held Permit minimum 6 months & completed 6 hour behind-the-wheel driver training course & 30 hours supervised behind-the-wheel, 5 hours at night. We recommend our Driver Ed in a Box® to use during the Learner stage. Shows the parent how to teach collision-free driving habits and provides unique teaching tools (mirrors, checklists, videos, audio instruction series, etc.).
  3. Full License, at least age 18 OR have successfully held a Provisional License for 12 consecutive months.
*No convictions for alcohol/controlled substance violations or crash-related
Teens want to know how to stay out of collisions!
Today’s teens do not just want their license; they want to be good collision-free drivers. They know the risks. Virtually all have friends who got a license and were involved in a collision in the first four weeks. Most teens have lost classmates due to fatal collisions.
Driver Ed in a Box®
Certificate of Completion!

Our product now includes both the Interactive CD-Rom Version and the Textbook Version for one low price.  You may use either version to complete the course at your own pace.

Teens want to know "why" the things you ask them to do will work. When you complete the full course you get a Certificate of Completion. Take this to your insurance agent. It varies state by state and by insurance company, but you may receive an insurance discount.
Using the full course your teen will learn why each step is important while learning the collision-free HABITS that make you a better driver. The full course also includes a section on Social & Consumer Issues. This includes how alcohol and drugs as well as emotions and attitude affect driving performance. Also covered are vehicle ownership (buying, leasing, insuring, and maintaining).
Over 15,000 students have used Driver Ed in a Box®.
"The materials are very thorough, progressive in learning and easy to use, not only for the student but also for the parent. What I found to be so positive is the strategic guidelines set up for the instructing parent to use for the in-vehicle training. It helps to eliminate the practice of just driving aimlessly around and completing the time requirements of the graduated licensing laws." - Deb Carlson, Minnesota Department of Public Safety

"I felt this was an excellent program in which everything is covered (and then some)." Susan Hamilton, Eagan, Minnesota

"Excellent. Very helpful in how to communicate effectively with your teen. The audio & video tapes gave clear instructions and demonstrations." Florence Mundt, Utica, Minnesota

"What I liked the best about the curriculum was how each new chapter included a little review of what was covered in the previous chapter. This helped me to maintain all the materials I learned throughout the course of my studies." - Rachel Lea Dickinson, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota

"Excellent. I liked the program for its thoroughness. The flexibility of going at our own pace was wonderful." L.L., Ham Lake, Minnesota
