Analyzing Drivers Ed Programs
Many states require young drivers to pass some type of official drivers ed program before they are allowed to obtain a driver’s license. For many parents, the idea of their teenager getting behind the wheel without going through formal driver’s education is quite a terrifying thought, which is why they are interested in enrolling their kids in a program even if it is not required by the state in which they live. Drivers ed programs used to mean sitting through hours of classroom instruction before heading out, along with several other students, and driving cautiously through your local community. Times have changed, however. Today, there are many ways to take a driver’s ed course; and while most of them can teach drivers the skills they need, it is important to make sure that any course you take includes the following features:
- Firm course objectives. It is always best to participate in a course of any kind, not just drivers ed programs, that have clear course objectives. You want to make sure you have benchmarks you are working toward, otherwise you may just be wading through information.
- Official certification. Whether you live in a state that requires driver’s education or not, it is always a good idea to be able to demonstrate the course you took was actually worthwhile. Many insurance companies will offer discounts to young drivers who complete official drivers ed programs, as well. Make sure that you have a clear, official certificate of completion available once the course has been completed.
- Clear safety precautions. No driver’s education course should ever encourage drivers to get behind the wheel before they can demonstrate their readiness. Further, all programs should have clear “Student Driver” displays available for use while young drivers are enrolled in the course.
